Recently, the California Office of Traffic Safety has awarded a grant of $280,000 to the Santa Barbara Police Department to help pay for a year-long program for various types of enforcements and public awareness efforts. To improve the safety of roadways and improve the quality of life amongst residents of visitors of Santa Barbara, the police department will be using the funds to pay for the following expenses:
- Educational presentations to community members
- DUI checkpoints
- Distracted driving enforcement
- DUI patrols
- Motorcycle safety enforcement
- Seat belt enforcement
- Car seat and child safety enforcement
- Pedestrian safety efforts
- Bicyclists safety efforts
- A way to identify the worst DUI offenders
- Warrant service option that will target multiple DUI offenders
- Specialized DUI and drugged driving training
Santa Barbara’s Police Department noticed a need for such an increase in funds and enforcement when the number of persons killed and injured in car accidents slowly started rising after they had greatly declined between 2006 and 2010.
Of course, this means that ultimately, law enforcement teams will become more focused than ever on stopping motorists who break the law. Many believe that this may cause some police officers to become overzealous when on patrol, causing many citizens to be arrested for incorrect charges.
